Equality Diversity and Inclusion 2015

Welcome back! It's that time of year again for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion activities and we are looking forward to lots of new and exciting ways to celebrate.

Here are just some of the events taking place:

First of all we are holding a screening of the film 'Girl Rising' on Monday 2nd march between 1:15-3:15pm to coincide with International Womens day on Sunday 8th March. Girl Rising tells the story of nine young girls from around the world who face child slavery, arranged marriages and other injustices. But by getting an education and learning they realise that they can overcome these obstacles themselves. All students and staff are welcome to attend. The showing will be held in the Sports Hall at Tameside College and at the same time in Hyde Clarendons Sports Hall.

We will also be filming a special welcome message to go onto our new Equality, Diversity and Inclusion site where you can find out everything about what Equality, Diversity and Inclusion means and also what the College does to encourage it. This message will be in sign language and done by one of our very own students who is fluent. Look out for it here.

Weekly Update 4th June

College News
This week and for the next 3 weeks, Hugo, a University student from France is working with us to help improve his English skills and to gain valuable work experience. Hugo is studying Marketing and Communication, Law, Economy, Finance and Negotiation at the Technologic University Institute of Quimper in France. So far he has worked in the College's Dovestones Department for students with disabilities, the Marketing Department, School Liason Team and Food Studies Department.

Over the course of the next few weeks he will go on to work in Finance, Principalship, Adult and Community Learning, IT Services, Reflections Restaurant, Human Resources, The Salon and the College Bistro. He hopes his time at Tameside College helps him with skills to become an entrepreneur and establish his own company.

Hugo commented; “In my short time at Tameside College I have learnt a lot about the culture differences between France and Britain. Working in the Marketing Department provided me with relevant skills and knowledge for my Marketing course in University. I am really grateful to the College for giving me the opportunity to work for the College and I am sure I will learn more as my time here continues.”

In Other News
This weeks main Equality and Diversity news from outside the College is that a third of women in Britain still believe that they don't have equality with men and the freedom to reach their full aspirations. A global study by Ipsos found that 69% of women feel that Britain is truly equal in terms of gender. In France however this at a much lower number, only 42% feel that they have full equality with men. On a more positive note however in a similar study it has been shown that 94% of people believe in equality for men and women in Britain.

The Assistant Chief Executive at Ipsos MORI, said: “Although most British women now feel they have equality with men, the British public – men and women – acknowledge that there is more to be done. And outside the UK, our survey serves as a stark reminder that attitudes towards women’s role in society are by no means uniform around the globe.”

Equality and Diversity Fact
Did you know that there are 9 protected characteristics in the UK under the Equality Act , 2010. This means that it is against the law to discriminate against anyone because of these factors.

Weekly Update 21st May

College News

This weeks update is all about the Assistive Technology that we have around the College and the Additional Learning Support Team that provides and trains people on how to use them. Assistive Technology is any product that allows people with a disability or impairment to communicate, learn and live more independently.

We have a variety of technology that is in use and available including loaning of equipment such as laptops, touch screen monitors and notebooks, specialist software on the College network, books that are specially adapted, colour filters and visual/hearing aids. Barrington Stoke Books provide the specially adapted books to our Library for students with Dyslexia and we also have reading and writing software called ‘Read Write Gold’ on the Computers in the library.

This video will give you an idea of some of the things that the Additional Learning Support Team and Dovestones staff do to help students. For anyone looking for information on Assistive Technology and how it can help, there is a display in the library and in room F2 where you can find some leaflets showing various equipment/software being used in the college.

If you feel that you need additional support you can speak to the Additional Learning Support Team in room E1 in the Victoria Building. They will be able to provide with specialist help and training on all this equipment.

This week is also Deaf Awareness Week which some of you may already know. Deaf Awareness Week is an annual event, coordinated by the UK Council on Deafness, that aims to raise awareness and understanding of the Deaf Community. The theme for 2014 is "Equality in communication for all." We are putting on a variety of events during the week that aim to raise awareness of the Deaf Community in the College with staff and students. These include a finger spelling competition on Thursday in the refectory and a themed treasure hunt which took place yesterday, around the College which was fantastic! If you are a student and would like to have a go at the finger spelling competition come down to the Bistro at 12:15 tomorrow.

In Other News

This weeks main Equality and Diversity news is that today is World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development which was declared by the UN in 2001. The event was set up to help bring people from around the world, from different cultures and ethnicities etc. together and help them learn how to live together better. There is also a campaign that has been set up by the UN on Social Media called 'Do One Thing' which encourages diversity and inclusion where people can tweet using the hashtag #DoOneThing.

Weekly Update 14th May

College News

Last week for two days, Acrobat TV a professional filming company came down to the College to record a special video of students who are part of the Dovestones Department for people with special educational needs. The students were filmed in our greenhouse, learning how to pot plants, in the sports hall taking part in exercise activities, in the life skills room making sandwiches for their weekly sandwich shop and also in a physiotherapy session.

Once produced, the video is going to be to be used to help next years students learn how to do these activities. It is a good way for the students to learn rather than just reading from a piece of paper and is much more exciting!  As promised last week, here are two of the photos from the filming itself in the greenhouse and life skills room.

In other news

In other news, a summer camp for teenagers from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures has been set up by the Equality and Human Rights Commission in the Lake District to help promote Equality and Diversity in the next generation of young people. The camp brings together 100 people from around the country to take part in activities such as Orienteering, bike riding, kayaking and mountain climbing. The camp aims to help people who would not normally be able to do those activities because of a disability or financial circumstances etc. and to also create a sense of team work between them.

Also Liberal Democrat MP, Jenny Willot who is the Equalities Minister has told newspapers that she dislikes Prime Ministers Questions in the houses of Parliament because she believes that it is 'totally male led' and should include more women. She then went on to criticise her own party because of the fact that only 12% of Liberal Democrat MPs are Women.

Weekly Update 7th May:

Equality and Diversity Week is now over but we want to carry on giving you the latest news, events, pictures and links to what is happening inside the College and out that involves Equality and Diversity so look out for our weekly blog posts right here. First of all we'd like you to know about a website called EDF that we keep going back to for news and events outside of the College and it's a really great way of keeping up to date with all things E & D. The subjects it covers include Age, Disabilities, Gender, Good relations, Human Rights, Ethnicity, Religion and Sexual Orientation. Click the image below to visit the website.

Secondly this week, we are hosting an event that is taking place this Friday which we will post photographs of in next weeks update. This will involve students from the Colleges Dovestones Department some of whom have severe learning difficulties and disabilities. A bus is going to be coming to the College to help the students learn how to independently catch the bus without the help of a an adult/carer etc. So they will learn the correct amount needed for a ticket, what to ask for when buying a ticket and so on. This is an exciting step for them as many have never done this before. This is all about improving their confidence in situations such as this and also to allow them to be more independent.

Final day of Equality and Diversity Week

It's the last day of Equality and Diversity Week today and we're looking back over all the activities that have been going on in and around the College. We've had special guest speakers, food from around the world to try, disability sports sessions, film screenings, charity stalls and much more. The whole point of this week has been to celebrate diversity, challenge stereotypes and promote equality. We're proud to say we have managed to help do this and fit all the activities in at the same so thank you to all the tutors and students that got involved and had a lot of fun in the process. This blog is a record of that hard work that everyone has put in to making it such a brilliant week and hopefully we can do it all again next year!

A final point, you can visit the Bistro today for a special menu that includes some fantastic dishes from
