Today the Sophie Lancaster Foundation paid us a visit

Today, Sylvia and Adam Lancaster of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation very kindly gave up their time to visit the College to give a talk to staff and students about the charity and the reasons for it being set up. Sophie, Sylvia's daughter was sadly killed by a group of youths in a Bacup park in 2007 because she was dressed differently to them. So her family decided that setting up a charity in Sophie's name would be the best way to remember her, increase awareness of hate crimes, challenge prejudices and to ultimately help to reduce them through educational groups. The charities work is invaluable to many people and has been successful in bringing Sophie's and others cases to the attention of the nation through the internet and the media.

Evonne Whalley, one of the Motor Vehicle tutors also put on a workshop for students to come down and have a go at basic car maintenance such as changing the oil and water plus checking tyre pressures. The session was part of an initiative to encourage more women to get involved with car maintenance/repair and was a resounding success with lots of students getting involved. This piece of research by Trust My Garage shows that women are catching up to men with car maintenance but their is still a little way to go. Makes for an interesting read http://www.pinterest.com/pin/367324913328300349/
